Troubleshoot microphone permissions

If Talk & Comment can’t access your microphone, use the steps below to fix it in Chrome.

1) Use the in‑app prompt

  • In onboarding, click Allow Microphone Access.
  • If Chrome opens a permissions tab, click Allow there and return to onboarding.

2) Check the address bar permissions

  1. In Chrome, click the lock icon in the address bar.
  2. Set Microphone to Allow for the current site.
  3. Refresh the page and try recording again.

3) Confirm Chrome’s mic settings

  • Open chrome://settings/content/microphone.
  • Make sure the correct microphone is selected.
  • Remove Talk & Comment from any Blocked list.

4) Check OS permissions

  • macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
  • Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.

Still blocked?

  • Restart Chrome and retry the onboarding mic step.
  • If you’re using Incognito, make sure the extension is allowed there.
  • If you’re on a managed school device (district Chromebook), your admin may need to allow:
    • microphone permissions
    • the Talk & Comment extension

If you still can’t record, share a screenshot of your mic permissions settings and tell us whether the device is managed by a school/district.
